Asian Dan Interview: Neon Coyote

1. Who is Neon Coyote?
Will: John, Noel aka Chico Love, and I. Three dudes born and raised on
the east coast. We started making music together last year, just for
shits and giggles.

2. What are your top 3 songs that make you dance?
Will: Fred Falke – 8:08 pm at the beach. Daft Punk – High Life. John
Dahlback- July First.
John: Surkin – White Knight Two, Daft Punk – One More Time, Congorock – Exodus
Chico – Louis La Roché – On The Floor, Best Fwends –
M.Y.S.E.L.F.(XXXchange Remix), Mylo – Otto’s Journey

3. What is your favorite remix ever?
Will:I have no idea where to begin thinking about a solid answer. My
favorite remixes right now are Bloody Beetroots vs. Wu Tang, Aeroplane
vs. Cut Copy, Fred Falke and Lifelike vs. anything, Fake Blood vs.
anything, Danger vs. SymbolOne, Anoraak Vs. College, and Shinichi
Osawa kills it.
John: Radiohead – Nude (HIPSTER RUNOFF Remix)
Chico – The Treaure Fingers remix of Snowden’s Anti-Anti was the
first remix I heard from this genre of music. I loved it then and I
could still listen to it now and have a good time.

4. What is your production style? What equipment do you use?
Will: Start with an idea, then try to make that kinda, and usually end
up with something completely different. Then figure out what I want to
do with the instrumental or whatever else I made. I use ableton,
logic, and a touch of micro korg.
John: Get stoned. I usually just roll it up in papers.

5. What is your DJ philosophy?
Will:Have fun and don’t take shit too seriously.
John: Make others dance as you would like to be made dance.
Chico: The Cool Kids said it best… Just keep them off the walls.

6. What are you listening to lately? What is the next big thing? What do
you think of the current electronic music scene?
Will:The heavy hitters on my shuffle are John Dahlback, Fred Falke,
Lifelike, Pacific!, Aeroplane, and Kopia as always. On that note I
think the next big things are Donovan, Damage, and The Franchising. As
for the music scene, S’all good as long as I keep getting sweet songs
to listen to all day.
John: I got that Machine’s Don’t Care 12 minute mix on repeat, they’re
definitely the next ‘big thing’. The current music scene is pretty
huge right now. There’s way too much shit, but there’s also way too
much good shit.
Chico: Lately I’ve been listening to a lot of rap, your Biggie’s,
Snoop, Outkast, Weezy, Clipse, Cool Kids, Juelz. But when I’m not
listening to rap it has to be Fake Blood or whatever I just
downloaded. The current electronic music scene is sounding real good
to me and the fact that the internet has a lot to do with it is cool.
The next big thing will be Damage, so good!

7. Future plans for Neon Coyote?
Will: We are doing a remix for Prairie Cartel’s single “Cracktown”. Then we are playing Whartscape in Baltimore on the 20th of this month and in August we are doing the Brooklyn Electronic Music Festival. Other than that we’re just gonna keep pluggin away and try to get some kind of a tour together.
John: Plus some side projects.

Asian Dan Presents Jean Nipon’s "No Sex Last Nite Mix" + Interview

[audio:http://diestruktur.com/asianmandan/music/July%202008/Asian%20Dan%20-%20Jean%20Nipon%20-No%20Sex%20Last%20Night%20Mix.mp3]
Asian Dan Presents Jean Nipon’s “No Sex Last Nite Mix” – 5 Minute Minimix

Tracklist:
Kate Perry – Use Your Love
Sedat – The Turkish Avenger
Surkin – Next of Kin (Laidback Luke remix)
DJ Rob 3 – The Chase (Nipon edit)
CZR – Groove to This
DJ PJ – Too Much Monkey
Billie Idol – Eyes Without a Face

Asian Dan Interviews: Jean Nipon

1. Who is Jean Nipon? What is your background? What is it like to be part of the Institubes family?
I’m a DJ, producer, and omelette eater.
I used to be drummer for some straight edge bands, then more emo or noise.
Institubes is such a great team, cuz we’re all different but we share the same love for ghetto music and shitty F.M. music. Its like: we do mainstream music but for specific people 🙂

2. What are your influences, musical or otherwise?
My main influence is girls, how you get them and how they throw you away. Then its a mix between Descendents, Technotronic, Don Caballerro, Prince, Johnnie to, Minor threat, Knut Hamsun, Saul Steinberg, Céline, KRS one, Tyree Cooper and some Joe Walsh. The best if you want to do some house music its to listen the complete opposite; like this you have more chance to create something original.

3. What is your DJ philosophy? Your production style?
When I play I always try to avoid playing the obvious stuff. The challenge is to entertain the crowd with some obscure gems. Like an old piano house track or maybe throw some 70’s hard rock. Anyway if the girls keep jumpin’ its all good. So whatever I play I must please the ladies. When I produce I think “Can I play this tune without thinking” so its often a matter of reduction. Less hi hat, less synth, less breaks. Tryin’ to obtain the core of a good dance track. It never come easy.

4. What are your top 5 songs that make you want to dance?
Oh boy! Ok so for this moment it would be:

1-Gemini- Stand Up
2-Prince – Pop Life
3-Jess and Crabbe- In Your Ear
4-James Gang – Walk Away
5-Beatles- Twist and fuckin’ Shout

5. What are you listening to right now that you can’t get enough of? What is the next big thing?
Well right now I don’t know . Everyday I discover some old electro disco jams with some crazy sounds into, so I’m not excited about a lot of new things; but wait oh yeah I’m into hardhouse again !! Dudes like DJ Trajic or Less Furious CZR. For me this music from the past is still the next future. Now the glam electro pop and guitar stuff are on the top, but I think the answer will come from the ghetto music.

6. Future plans?
Next will be the “Eurogirls go Baltimore” Vol. 2 with DJ Orgasmic and many guests? It will be hugely stoopid? And on September my ep “Wild at Heart” on Institubes.

Daft Punk x Kurtech

Daft Punk – Aerodynamic (Kurtech Remix)

Kurtech finally found this track and sent it over to me, he wants everyone to know that this was his first remix ever and that he has learned a lot more, pssh this is such a great remix of Daft Punk, a feat that very few people have achieved let alone a 17 year old producer from down under 🙂 Enjoy!

Asian Dan Interviews: LIONSHARE

1. Who is LIONSHARE? How would describe your music?

J. Gatz: Pop rap.
Frontpage: Pop hop.
Hot Tub Jonny: Poppadopoulis. Ask Cam how to spell it.

2. Who makes all the beats? What is your creative process like?

J. Gatz: Frontpage wakes me up from deep R.E.M. sleep. I narrate my dream. We circle every third word in the transcript. We browse our record collection for songs including these words. Sampling is chance.
Frontpage: I melt the fillings of the dead. Add that to vinyl solution. Boil on high.
Hot Tub Jonny: Frontpage does the beats. He’s like that guy in the movie where he counts the quarters when he drops them. Or toothpicks. Raindance. The creative process involves, including but not limited too®: Côtes du Rhone, Hennessey, Triptofan, one way tickets to Feza, PBR, Louis XIII.

3. What are your biggest influences on your music?

J. Gatz: JLG, JLB, Cave Pearls, Pearl Harbor, Harbor Seals, Sealed Fates, Fate Albert, Albert Brooks, Bruichladdich, Zebra Cakes.
Frontpage: David Banner, David Banner. Lil Wayne, R.A.G.U., Snap hop, Alexander Scriabin, Tiny Tim, Wagner, Ian MacKaye, Stravinsky, Henry Rollins, Ex Models, Zebra Cakes.
Hot Tub Jonny: G. G. Allin, Nabokov, Caps Lock, Zebra Cakes.

4. What are your thoughts on the current state of hip-hop/rap?

J. Gatz: Last Christmas I prayed to Santa for a Busta Rhymes and Mystikal collaboalbum. No luck. Santa’s getting a dis track this year.
Frontpage: Sometimes the bass is too loud. One time I got sick from drinking old milk. I got a weak stomach! My stomach will continue to hurt until Mystikal gets out of jail and makes a full length with Busta Rhymes.
Hot Tub Jonny: New John Varvatos store in the Marcy Projects. Summer ’07!

5. Future plans for LIONSHARE? Any collabs or remixes?

J.Gatz
: I’m moving to the desert. Play songs to the fireflies and rattlesnakes. Make some Indian friends. Both kinds of Indians. Remixes? I’ll remix myself a mojito. New York is kind of a mojito town.
Frontpage: Our first show is next Friday (the 13th of June @ Death By Audio in Brooklyn). We’re going to have a big record release party in late July. Painted hats! Faces obscured!
Hot Tub Jonny: Spinnas on your headphones. LIONSHARE headphones. They really spin!

6. Final thoughts or words for Asian Dan readers.

J.Gatz: See us live.
Frontpage: See us dead.
Hot Tub Jonny: Hear is dead.

Check out this track, it reminds me of something Madlib would produce. I love what LIONSHARE does to that classic sample especially during the chorus. If I was back in NYC I would definitely be at their debut show tomorrow night at Death By Audio in Brooklyn. So go represent Asian Dan and support LIONSHARE if you are in NYC and hit up this show!

Cazals: Luca’s Mixtape 3 & Martin’s 10 Songs that Shaped their Album "What Of Our Future"

Here is a mixtape by Cazal’s guitarist Luca. It is a fantastic mix of some dirty and heavy sounding tracks.
Luca’s Mixtape 3
Luca’s Mixtape 3 (zshare)

1. Lady Lazarous – Lillica Libertine
2. Hate – Adam Freeland
3. Bring the Noise (Sfaction rmx) – Benny Benassi
4. Kore – Dusty Kid
5. Venus – Sebastian Leger
6. ?
7. Break yourself – Mimo
8. Kittin is High (Jojo the Freq rmx) – Miss Kittin

Here is Martin’s (Producer and Bassist) top 10 songs that Shaped their new album, “What of Our Future”, Out the 26th of May. Their next single “Somebody, Somewhere” is out the 5th of May, it is such an amazing pop tune.
Cazals Myspace

Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) – Eurythmics – Sweet Dreams
“I always aspire to create something which captures an atmosphere which is definitely outside of the recording studio. This is one of my favourite tracks ever and I have never been able to imagine it being written or recorded… it has a some kind of divine quality as though it just it dropped from the sky one day.”

Rydeen – Yellow Magic Orchestra – Solid State Survivor
“For me, this is the epitome of everything that is great about electronic music. I was literally speechless the first time I heard this and can only imagine what it must have sounded like to audiences in 1978! The footage of them performing this song on Japanese tv is still THE coolest thing I have ever seen… ever.”

Self-Control – Laura Branigan – Self Control
“This won against Heart Of Glass (Blondie) in my head just now but I think I love both because they’re great songs, well produced and both have amazing drummers playing along to simple drum machines. This one wins on atmosphere because it has it’s own dark, little world with creatures and so on. It has JR Robinson who also played the flawless beats on all the best Michael Jackson songs. I think he and Clem Burke must have been early prototypes for some kind of “perfect drummer” robot. Imagine both of them dressed as robots, with chrome drum kits, on stage with Daft Punk…”

Money For Nothing – Dire Straits – Brothers In Arms
“My dad had this on vinyl and I can remember dancing around with my sister to this when I was a little boy and it still excites me when I hear it today. Once again, I just cannot imagine that guitar intro was ever played by a human! It makes me think of a Transformer transforming and turning into an amazing silver guitar that Megatron can rock out on.”

Krystof Penderecki – Therenody For The Victims Of Hiroshima
“If you don’t know this one just think of the beginning of 2001: A Space Odyssey. That cloud of sharp strings in suspended animation I-think-I’m-going-to-be-sick-or-pass-out-if-this-carries-on sort of sound. Dark. Not of this world. Who’d have thought the future would come from Poland?”

Gustav Holst – The Planets
“From that brooding, ominous intro of Mars right through to the disembodied choir finale of Neptune, this is simply one of the greatest pieces of music ever written. And made by an Englishman. God save the Queen.”

Igor Stravinsky – The Rite Of Spring
“This is a tour de force of emotion, atmosphere and violence. It caused a riot at it’s world premier and had women passing out in the aisles.
And like Francis Bacon, this seems to feed my preoccupation with death. Like a great poem, it paints pictures in the most graphic, sometimes disturbing ways. Everyone else can only aspire to this sort of greatness.”

12:51 – The Strokes – Room On Fire
“The Strokes represent the opposite of much of what I’ve said up until now. I can actually imagine Julian singing this (and every other song of his) and this is his talent. Everything is delivered with such a naive, honest, human quality that it feels almost like you’re a fly on the wall of his innermost sanctum. Like studying someone’s face while they’re sleeping. Oh, and I chose this particular song because I’m still absolutely floored every time I hear that “is it, isn’t it?” synthetic guitar sound. Sick.”

Veridis Quo – Daft Punk – Discovery
“This song feels like it “moves” and I can’t explain exactly what it is I mean but I feel like I’m actually in motion when I hear it. It’s like going on a journey, travelling into this songs little galaxy. Headphones on, eyes shut, on a journey through space and time avec Thomas and Guy-Man.” (Does pyramid sign with hands).

Madonna – Lucky Star – Madonna
“There’s something magical about that arpeggio intro. It just excites me and makes me want to be a teenager in Middle-America, circa 1984, hanging out at 31 Flavours, in my hot-red sports car with a pastel sweater over my shoulders and a keg on the back seat. Sort of the aural equivalent of actually living in a John Hughes movie. This was a close call with Cyndi Lauper – Girls Just Wanna Have Fun (another dancing with my sister favourite).”

I love these songs and I think they influence everything I do.

Asian Dan Interview: Fred Falke

1. What made you want to start making music? Did your upbringing and family have a big influence on why you decided to make music? Has music always been your main job and only way to make money?

My father was a pianist, and we had a piano, so I spent a lot of times listening to him and playing. Also I’ve always enjoyed listen to records since I was a kid.
I screwed up my studies, so my only job has been music, always.

2. Brian Eno once said “Play more things that make me dance around and less things that make me sit and look miserable in a plastic chair”. I definitely see that this mindset has infiltrated mainstream music in the past few years. What are your thoughts on this?

When I record a track, I always think: “Would I like to listen to it and dance?” This is the way I like music, I want it to make me feel good.
Also I like to listen to the music that suits my mood, sometimes when I feel like sitting down and relaxing and it’s raining outside and I listen to Satelite of Love by Lou Reed and I feel so good, not sad at all. That’s the magic of the music.

3. Who are your favorite producers? Who are your favorite bassists?

The Neptunes are brilliant, simple and massive production, i like them!
I also like Snoop Dog, for the same reason, simple ideas, and big sound, it goes straight into your mind! And of course Kanye West, he’s legend.
As for bass players, I’ve listened to a lot of them while studying bass guitar, but only a few keep driving me crazy, the best of all is the late GARY KING, just awesome, brilliant musician and bass player, I love his sound and every bassline he recorded is just magic to my hears, he is the best. Also John Entwistle from The Who was a big influence to me, he always plays the right note @ the right time, and makes the songs so big.

4. What are your top 3 songs that make you dance? What are your top 3 albums/tracks that make you want to rock?

Soul Bells from Le Knight Club
Unplugged from DJ Falcon
Deep Snside from Hardrive

Rockwise:
The Who “Who are You?” – I can listen to it endlessly.
Ozzy Osbourne, “Live@Budokan”
Incubus “Light Grenades”

5. What have you been listening to lately? What music today excites you and see going places in 2008?

Latest album from Katalyst, so good, I dig that 60’s vibe, and the band Sparkadia, they are really great.I like many kind of music, hip-hop, pop, dance, rock whatever makes me grind and dance is cool! I think the mix of the genres is what makes music go further, to the next step.

6. What is your favorite piece of musical gear? What is your favorite envelope filter for bass?

My E-MU SP1200, this is the best music gear ever, so simple to use the sound is banging, you can make an album with it!
For bass I have my old Mutron 3 and a Meatball Filter, they sound so cool.

7. Any plans of starting an all-star electronic “band” like Steve Aoki, The Faint & Boys Noize? It would be impressive to see all of you DJ’s and producers “rock out”. Maybe a big collaboration with Alan Braxe, Kris Menace and some your other dance colleagues is in the works? Any big releases or exciting news you would like to share? When are you coming to the states?

Alan & I are not working together anymore.
I’ve met so many talented people I wish to make music with, Knightlife, Miami Horror, Kris Menace…we just need to catch up in studio.
I’ve just finished a remix for Lykke Li a singer, great voice, and also I’ve finished my next release, need to get it signed now , hahah!
I’ll be working on my own solo album in the next few months.
I Definitely want to play in the USA!!!
The sooner the better, need to get gigs, any promoters reading? 🙂

Asian Dan Interview: Cazals

Somebody, Somewhere out May 5
Cazals Myspace
Cazals’ “What Of Our Future” is out on the 26th of May.

I was able to speak with Daniel, guitarist of the Cazals to find out what their past few months have been like, opening for Daft Punk and recording their first full length album.

1. How does it feel to be done with your first album? Any exciting rock and roll studio stories?
Sometimes I worry I sound a bit arrogant when I say it but our album is really fucking great. It was a long process to get to making it but I couldn’t be any happier with the results, it made the many rough times worthwhile. I had to edit a little mini mix of the album the other day with Martin (bass player and producer), like a 5 minute ‘best of’ sort of thing and we spent ages deliberating over what went in the mix, which I think is a good sign.

As for stories from the studio, we managed to convince The Plasticines (a French, all girl group) to come down to the studio and let us record them screaming for 5 minutes. Also a big regret is that when we were mixing the album, some of Phoenix turned up to say hello and hear what we were doing but we had gone out to lunch!

2. Who are some of your influences, music or otherwise? Jon Brion once said “He can’t escape the Beatles”, what musicians can you not escape and always look towards to for inspiration?

All the different members of Cazals have varied tastes and therefore influences so I can’t really speak for the band. Personally, I just play a lot of guitar and that’s how I come up with songs, ideas just come to you when you play. There are loads of people I love listening to and some like the Strokes, Daft Punk, John Frusciante, Radiohead conciously influence ideas and sounds I go for and I’ll learn how to play their material. Then there are other artists like Beck and Hot Chip where its not such a conscious thing but because I listen to them so often their influence seeps into ideas.

3. What are some albums/aritsts/songs you are listening to these days?

Some pretty obvious ones like Radiohead – In Rainbows, Chromeo – Fancy Footwork, Hot Chip – Made In The Dark and Justice. Also I’ve been listening to a fair bit of Weezer and late 70’s David Bowie recently.

4. How was it opening for Daft Punk in Japan? How does it feel to be part of this new electronic music scene even though you are not really “electronic”? What do you guys think about this cross genre collaborations? I think it is great that there is the spirit of rock is coming out in all genres lately.

After making our album I think supporting Daft Punk was the coolest thing I’ve ever been part of. They made us feel very welcome and to be part of what was the coolest show on earth for a few days was amazing.

We’ve always hated the idea of scenes, people say we were in the East London scene or in the electro scene or the new-wave guitar band scene, its all bollocks really. We are a band that play guitars and synths and we’re influenced by all types of music. I think two things Martin, who produced the album, listened to most when we were out in Paris were Slipknots ‘Get This’ and Krzysztof Penderecki’s ‘Threnody for the Victims of Hiroshima’, not very East London electro scene, we just dont purposely try to be a certain genre.

I really like the (heavy) rock sound thats coming through in dance music, I was lucky enough to be hanging out with SebastiAn when he was playing in London and he absolutely ruined my ears for about 3 days but it was worth it, I went a bit too mental when he dropped ‘Killing In The Name Of’ but luckily so did everyone else.

5. Why are your lives boring?

They’re not at all…we’ve supported Daft Punk!

Cazals – Somebody, Somewhere (Lifelike Remix)

Luck On Strike Interview

Exclusive Asian Dan Interview with Luck On Strike:

– Have you two been involved in any bands/musical projects previous to Luck On Strike?
Gauthier : I played rock and funk before going to electronic music.
Bertrand : I’ve been in several bands before, but it was such a pain to handle egos, delays, etc.
I currently have an electro pop project named Computerpop for which Gauthier helps me too. We have lots of songs in progress for it, but it’s a side project since we are very busy with Luck on Strike.

– What instruments do you guys play?
Gauthier : I play guitar, bass, I sing, and I program synths.
Bertrand : I’m not a musician in the classical sense since I don’t know musical theory. But I learned keyboard and music composing on my own. I’m more a synth/sampler/software programmer. Maybe one day I’ll find time to learn musical theory, I could open new perspectives to me.

– I don’t know if you guys are familiar with Jon Brion the producer/songwriter/film scorer who produced all of Fiona Apple’s albums and produced Kanye’s album Late Registration but he says that “He can never escape the Beatles”. What artist do you feel that you can never escape or always look to for inspiration? Musical or otherwise.
Bertrand : I know Jon Brion for being the music scorer for Eternal Sunshine (Gondry) or Magnolia. Score Music is what I listen to most. It’s hard to list what influences us since it’s quite wide and numerous. But I don’t feel trapped by a sound or a band because I love too many different kinds of them.
Gauthier : Well, Daft Punk made electronic music a mainstream genre, and I think that we cannot escape them in the same way rock cannot escapes blues : the genre evolves, but the roots remains. This doesn’t prevent from writing good songs and find your own way and sound.

– What are your three of favorite songs/albums right now?
Bertrand :
1. The Buggles – Video kill the radio star (the production is incredible)
2. Daft Punk – Discovery (It showed that it was possible to make a true electronic music album very popular. It opened another door after Homework).
3. Vangelis – Blade Runner OST (Incredible analog synthesis)

Gauthier :
What I’m listening to today :
1. Zoot Woman – We won’t break (track)
2. Pearl Jam – Vitalogy (album)
3. King Crimson – In the court of the Crimson King (album)

– What is your favorite piece of studio equipment?
Bertrand : We work apart most often, so we each have a home studio plus a third one for the vocal takes. At home I love my mac book, my Virus and my Juno 106.
Gauthier : My hand made vocal booth in studio B (studio A is home…). Great microphones and great preamps are useless without a good place to make the takes.

– What software/hardware do you use?
Bertrand : Cubase SX3, Kontakt for my drums kits and a bunch of freewares. Gauthier is teaching me Ableton Live.
Gauthier : I’ve tried some different kinds of software, and achieved the same sound on the output. So I came back to SX3 to exchange works in progress with Bertrand easily, but software don’t matter that much to me. Hardware is something else : I’m mad about vintage/modern guitar pedals, I love my Juno 106, etc. These are irreplaceable.

– I see that you guys use Ableton Live in a very “musical” way like DJ Falcon, by creating mashups of loops and grooves.
Gauthier : Yes, Bertrand and I are preparing a kind of live mashup where we play against each other, to raise the pressure. Live is like a video game to me. We have controllers so we touch our laptops as least as we can.

– Any shows/DJ sets coming up? Any releases coming up?
Gauthier : We’ve been busy with production until now, but we’re going back to the stage soon. We’re in discussion with several records labels, so we cannot talk about releases now.

– I saw that you guys are fans of anime, what are your thoughts on the live action Dragonball movie they are making?
Bertrand : I’m not mad about manga, but I like it. I’m a bit skeptical about this project. It’s gonna be hard to translate such a popular and recognisable anime. I think that cinema has still technical limitations while anime doesn’t, even with the best effects. But I hope it’s gonna be a good surprise.
