Asian Dan Q&A: GRUM

GRUMS is a UK producer that has been making his rounds in the blogosphere for the past year or so with his fantastic productions and remixes. From the likes of Kings of Leon, Lady Gaga, and Passion Pit – Grum has touched them all. Check out his new singe “Cant’ Shake this Feeling” and some live dates here in North America. He will be in NYC tonight at Santos with The Twelves. I will be giving away guestlist spots via Twitter for the GRUM x The Twelves party in LA May 8, so be on the look out on the Asian Dan Twitter.

Can’t Shake This Feeling (Album Version)byHeartbeatsheartbeats

Asian Dan Q&A: GRUM

1. Who is GRUM? How would you describe your music?

GRUM is all your wildest dreams come true. Whatever they may be. Probably. My music is probably best described as big, camp, sexy dance music. I saw it described as Power Disco earlier, not sure about that one.

2. What was your first musical memory?

I remember hearing Human League’s Don’t You Want Me on some local radio station and recording it to a tape when I was like 7. I listened to it over and over on repeat for days, loved it.

3. What are your influences musical or otherwise?

I’m mostly a music guy; I have appreciation for art and stuff like that but really I’m just obsessed/influenced by sound. So that means all the artists which have really inspired me…I guess Daft Punk, Giorgio Moroder, and all those random obscure amazing 80s disco records that pop up on blogs. I’m really enjoying Barry Gibb’s production for various 80’s artists right now so I’m sure I’m absorbing lots of those influences.

Midnight Juggernauts: Vital Signs + Get Connected

Midnight Juggernauts return to this forever changing synth laden musical landscape with a futuristic sound that has been dipped in 60s psychedelia. They channel Giorgio Moroder but thinkGiorgio Moroder “Tears” pre-sequenced basslines. More organs and mellotrons than digital sounding synths. And more stoner/shoegaze guitars. Overall Midnight Juggenauts showcases how they are still a band that are out to explore and highlight their organic songwriting/musical side. “The Crystal Axis” is set to penetrate our psyches 5.28.2010.

Checkout the first single off the album “Vital Signs” and the B-side “Get Connected”.

LCD Soundsystem x Holy Ghost! + “Static on the Wire” EP

Holy Ghost! has finally emerged with a new reworking of LCD Soundsystem’s latest single “Drunk Girls”, an 80s disco synth track that evokes memories of New Order. This track has been released all in time for the start of the LCD Soundsystem and Holy Ghost! tour where Holy Ghost! shall be debuting their live full band version of the project. I am hoping it is a massive disco undertaking with members surrounded by multiple synthesizers, twisting and tweaking in order to make the finest analog dance music to hit dancefloors in quite a while. Check out holyghostnyc.com for more info.

Their new EP “Static On The Wire” will be out on May 18 on DFA featuring the title track, “Static on the Wire” which features Penguin Prison providing back up vox. Also the slowburner disco tune “Say My Name” is on this EP which was also featured on the latest Kitsune Maison Compilation 9. I love the Barbara Kruger inspired artwork.

HURTS x Jamaica + The Bermuda Party Compilation Mix

HURTS are a shoegaze 80s sounding synth pop group from the UK that I just discovered. Dark, tragic and thoughtful music full of great pop hooks. Depeche Mode for Twenty Ten. Jamaica transforms “Better Than Love” into a pop French synth tune. Expect big things from both groups this year.

HURTS – Better Than Love (Jamaica Remix)

“Wonderful Life” was my first introduction to HURTS – a song that evokes memories of Annie Lennox and Depeche Mode.

HURTS – Wonderful Life

The French Power Pop Rock duo Jamaica has been making marks all over the interwebs with their newest single “I Think I Like U 2” in all its various incarnations via its amazing music video by SO-ME and remixes by the likes of the mighty Breakbot. Jamaica compiled a great party mix entitled “The Bermuda Party Compilation Mix” a mix that resembles a 2 Many DJ’s set mixed with a Jean Nipon and Breakbot mix. In other words an amazing collection of tunes that educates and keeps you dancing.

Jai Paul

What a massive producer and talent from the UK, Jai Paul makes what sounds like lo-fi Hudson Mohawke meets D’Angelo and Madlib with massive amounts of pop hooks sprinkled on top. Definitely a refreshing sound in this electronic music world. I love his absurd humor as well, just take a look at his myspace. Check out his other beats, unfortunately they are only like 20 second clips, definitely checkout “Genevieve” – I need more music from you Jai Paul! Pretty sure Diplo will be all over this, when is the Diplo x Jai Paul x M.I.A. x Santigold collab coming out?

Mystery Jets – Flash A Hungry Smile

Finally Mystery Jets returns with nothing less than an amazingly well written pop tune. I cannot wait for this album. Apparently the album has “flecks of Fleetwood Mac, 10cc, Hall & Oates, Electric Light Orchestra and Roxy Music” sprinkled through out it. Bring on the 70s sunshine!

Talking Heads x Todd Edwards

Todd just sent me over his remix of Talking Heads’ “Burning Down the House”, a track he debuted on his FACT mix he made back in January. For all of you in the UK who were waiting to see Todd last night sorry that didn’t happen, apparently Volcanos hate good music. Word on the street is that there are no flights from London to America until May 1. Twenty Twelve is now upon us so instead of freaking out just download this great remix and dance. Also be on the look out for a new 90 minute Todd Edwards Scion A/V mix coming soon!

Some words via Todd’s interview and mix for FACT Mix from back in January.

“Growing up I loved ‘Burning Down The House‘. When I hear it, it reminds me of my childhood. Over the last year or so, I’ve been envisioning songs that I could “Todd-i-fy. ” I could hear ‘Burning Down The House’ as a club track. I feel good about the results.”
