The Rapture : How Deep Is Your Love? (A-Trak Dub aka Dub For Mehdi)

A-Trak digs deep with this remix of The Rapture’s “How Deep is Your Love?”. He digs even deeper with this dub version that was championed by the great DJ Mehdi.

RIP Mehdi <3 Forever "I did this remix over the summer, and when I was close to finishing it I played it to my friend, the irreplaceable DJ Mehdi. We often played each other our productions for feedback. As it turns out he and Riton were visiting New York so they stopped by my apartment. I was working on the main version of the remix, the vocal version. I knew I would make a few alternate edits during the mixdown. The funny thing was, Mehdi's favorite part was the ending! He and Riton suggested that I have that part come in earlier. My reaction was: that would work well for the dub version. And sure enough, when I finished mixing it down I made a dub with their suggestion. When I sent it to Mehdi shortly after, he responded (as a joke) that I should call it "Dub For Mehdi". He included it in his "Tunisian Summer" mix. And then, as we all know, the unimaginable happened and we lost our dear friend. The least I can do now is name the edit after him. This one's for you, Memed." - A-Trak, September 28, 2011 [audio:http://diestruktur.com/asianmandan/music/Sept%202011/How-Deep-Is-Your-Love_-A-Trak-Dub-aka-Dub-For-Mehdi.mp3] Download: The Rapture : How Deep Is Your Love? Emil & Friends : Prescriptions

When I first gave Emil & Friends’ debut album, “Lo & Behold” a first listen I was struck by the vast sounds and genres that Emil touches upon, while still adding his unique touch that makes him “Emil”. “Prescriptions” was a song that at first listen hit me by how epic yet very personal it sound and felt. The lyrics especially captured me the most by how honest and truthful they are.

I will let Emil’s description of the song speak for itself, Prescriptions will “pull the listener into a sleeping bag on the shingled roof of their best friend’s house, or place them wandering midsummer through a field so familiar that they are guided through the dark by memory instead of moonlight.”

“Lo & Behold” will be available to the world on October 11, 2011 thanks to Cantora Records. So be ready for this 11 song musical journey. Till then feel free to listen and download this cinematic and nostalgia driven song for free via spinner.com.

Chateau Marmont : Receive And Follow + 2011 North American Tour Dates

Ah! The French. I’ve met a few French people in my life and have listen to some of their music as well. Good stuff. Speaking of French music, here is Chateau Marmont. The French quartet are set to release their debut album featuring some of the finest of exploratory synth pop in 2011. While listening to “Receive And Follow” you will not help but ponder and question the meaning of Life as you are swarmed by twinkling synth and an indecipherable vocoder voice. When you think the song only has synthesizers to offer, you are heralded in by regal horns that announce the epic “future” at hand.

Be sure to check Chateau Marmont out on tour this October with Revolver as the 2 bands make their way across North America.

The Rapture : Live @ SPINHouse, NYC – 9.20.2011

It was October 24, 2003 at Roseland Ballroom in NYC where I first witnessed this band opening for The Mars Volta who had the most enthusiastic cowbell player ever. Fast forward to the Summer of 2007 (The Bloghaus Summer of 69) at Coney Island, the cowbell strikes back – this time opening for Daft Punk, which brings us to 2011. The cowbell is still going strong, this time armed with 3 cowbells, The Rapture are back and stronger than ever. I had the pleasure of being invited to SPIN Magazine HQ to witness an intimate set from The Rapture as part of the SPINHouse music series. It was a short but super energetic set from the trio featuring all the hits. “How Deep Is Your Love?” sounded quite epic live and definitely a highlight, but to hear that classic tune “House of Jealous Lovers” brought me back. I will let these .gifs I made of the show speak for themselves, be prepared for excessive cowbell and guitar tapping.

The Rapture : Live @ SPINHouse, NYC – 9.20.2011 Setlist:

CANT : Be Around

Here is an exclusive B-Side Dossier is giving away from Chris Taylor’s side project/Terrible Records collective entitled “Be Around”. It is a 7 min dark synth pop tune that conjures up images of Sebastien Tellier circa his “Sexuality” days, coincidently a member of Sebastien Tellier’s band is playing in CANT’s live band.

White Denim : Hot Thought

White Denim is a band I ignored for a longtime just because of their band name. I assumed they were just some generic lo-fi, sloppy, garage rock band from Austin. But I was quite wrong once I saw them down at SXSW this year. A perfect blend of proggy noodling and Pop with an over the top Rock energy. Their album “Last Day of Summer” was on repeat all this past Spring and Summer. “Hot Thought” is a bonus track off their latest release, “D”. “Hot Thought” is one of the most straight forward Pop sounding tracks of theirs that channels some of the Yacht Rock greats. Watch out of the super smooth Steely Dan chorus on “Hot Thought”

Checkout this live performance White Denim did for “From The Basement” – quite an energetic and tight performance.

Daft Punk : Drive Unreleased 1994 [Soma]

Soma Records is here to celebrate their 20th Anniversary with this rare artifact of the shape of Daft Punk to come. This unreleased demo track untitled, “Drive” is pre-cursor to all that we know was Daft today. My favorite thing about hearing this unreleased tune is catching all the Daft elements that have been carried through all their songs and can still be heard in their tracks to this day. This track definitely became Daft Punk’s “Rock’n Roll”.

Thom Yorke’s MoneyBack Mix for Mary Anne Hobbs’ “Response”on XFM

With the roster of producers/DJs that Thom recruited for their King of Limbs remix album, you can tell that Thom is quite in the know with his contemporary electronic music. Thom is clear on his way to fulfilling his destiny as “DJ Thom”. I love that Thom finds a way to sneak in some Fela Kuti into this 44 min mix for the lovely Mary Anne Hobbs.
