Fred Falke strikes back – this time using his magic French touch on LA’s Music Go Music, that 70s ABBA/Olivia Newton John, disco band signed to Secretly Canadian. Interesting use of that 8-bit sounding synth. Check out what Kama Maza from Music go Music has to say about Fred’s remix:

“Fred’s version leans more towards those major chords… I’m not sure how those kind of changes affect the story. It seems to draw more attention to the choruses, and make them seem more like catharsis than resignation…”

Warm, thoughtful, introspective and soulful electronic that comes from the UK seems like an oxymoron but acts like Bibio, Bullion and Lone are doing it quite well. Lone (Werk Discs Records) from Nottingham, United Kingdom produces warm/organic sounding beats that evoke images of lovely autumn days. His synth sounds swirl and swarm you in a very Boards of Canada way. Lone’s album Ecstasy & Friends is set to come out soon so be on the look out. Once again I will state that I love Joy Orbison and what he is doing for electronic music. It is a refreshing sound that is cleansing our burnt out/bloghaus banger palette. There is a a hint of the crazy dubstep everyone is raving about but in a very tasteful way. My favorite element of Joy Orbison’s productions is his nod to classic UK Garage and the greats such as Todd Edwards, especially what he does with vocals. Joy is the master of subtly – pulling from all the best parts of dubstep, Garage, 2-Step while creating his own version of warm and soulful electronic loveliness.

VHS Head is a mysterious Blackpool, UK native producer signed to Skam Records.

Rumors are flying around that VHS Head is a secret moniker of the amazing Jackson & His Computer Band. I had the pleasure of checking out Jackson’s DJ set as he opened for Justice this last week in NYC at Webster Hall. Not what I was expecting from Jackson, but it was a DJ set full of electro blog-haus bangers even Benny Benassi’s “Satisfaction” which got all the br0s dancing/moshing. It’s too bad none of audience knew who he was to really appreciate his genius. Justice essentially took Jackson’s production style of micro-sampling/cut and paste, collage style. Just take a listen to Jackson & His Computer Band’s song “Hard Tits” and tell me that track did not heavily influence Justice’s “Valentine”. Anyway back to VHS Head – at first listen it does sound very similar to Jackson’s work but I feel like it is would be a step backwards for Jackson to produce tracks such as these. Either way I am a big fan of this chopped up beats and samples production style. These tracks even remind me a little of Venetian Snares as well.

Jupiter is a Parisian Disco Pop duo (including keytar) – Checkout “Mama Used to Say” a slick disco pop tune with a fat synth bassline and a cute sounding female vocalist. Nothing revolutionary but just a well produced and put together tune. Dance.

UPDATE: This is actually a cover of Junior’s 1982 track “Mama Used to Say” – the original is way better, just listen to that growl during the chorus. Thx Beep Iams for the heads up!

After hearing the Magistrates 20 Min Mixtape – a what I would call a “scanning through the radio/channel surfing” mix/mashup, I wanted to hear more. I asked the Magistrates boys if they would craft another similar mix that would give us all another peak into their pop music minds and they graciously agreed. Get ready for 20 mins of schizophrenic pop madness. They mix Can’s “Vitamin C” into Radiohead’s “Idioteque” into Yellow Magic Orchestra’s “Rydeen” – three of my favorite tunes of all time so I cannot argue with the insanity and awesomness that is this mix. Try to guess all the tunes. Also checkout how they let Damon Albarn win in ping pong.

Asian Dan Interview: MAGISTRATES

1. Who is Magistrates? How would you describe your sound?

We are a collective of scientists, mathmeticians, chefs and philanthropists. The music we play alters the chemicals in your brain and makes your feet and hips groove uncontrollably.

2. What was your first musical memory?

Michael Jackson and The Beatles dominate most of our childhood. I [Galbally] have a weird memory of having Sunday Roast when I was about 4 or 5 and my Dad was playing Chris De Burgh, I think it was the whole album, and I remember at the time feeling physically sick… I’ve never been able to enjoy a Sunday Roast again.

3. How did the band form? What is the band’s vision and goal?

Our paths crossed, we all enjoyed the same things, we had the same type of mindset and we all played music; so we just put our heads together and eventually formed Magistrates. We aim to keep on making good music for as long as humanly possible, to express ourselves through it, and to send it rippling around the globe.

What an amazing bassline GLOVES added to this remix of The Scare. It is very Chic sounding, Bernard Edwards would be proud. The vox remind me of the Presets.
