July 13 marked the day Hey Champ released their sonic baby into the world – “Star”. A synth rock album with an emphasis on the rock. All the blog favorites are on the album, Cold Dust Girl and Neverest but my personal favorite is the title track “Star”. It is a lofty synth pop song that reminds of Joe Jackson’s “Steppin’ Out” meets ELO and the Buggles. Star feels like a galactic theme song for a Japanese space cowboy. Download and listen below…

The NYC production duo The Knocks of Heavy Roc Music, recently released their newest single “Make It Better” through Neon Gold Records – a 7″ featuring a remix from the mysterious Emil & Friends. This is the first production/remix from Emil & Co that has surfaced on da web these past few blog years. It is a remix that clocks in under the 2 minute mark and is a heavy schizo-funk track full of synth stabs and chunky filtered bass that would make Bootsy Collins and the Parliament proud. I wonder what Mr. Emil has in store for the world…
Mount Kimbie recently played at the Belgian festival, 10 Days Off showcasing new tracks from their fantastic album, “Crooks & Lovers”. This live performance is part DJ set meets live electronics with guitar- a very tasteful and delicate way of bringing their gorgeous music to a live environment. I will definitely be at their Brooklyn show, check out their North American tour dates here.
Active Child get the 90s Balearic Disco treatment by Classixx. Sparkling RnB chords fall over Active Child’s emotionally charged falsetto creating the one of the most emotional summer jams of the year.
Jimmy Whoo takes on the one and only, MF DOOM. A bold and almost blasphemous act but Mr. Whoo pulls it off, creating a summer feel good jam with his take on Doom’s “My Favorite Ladies”.
WHAT?! Total mind explosion as Mr. Tom Jenkinson aka Squarepusher, one of my top 3 bassists of all time is about to release a new project through Ed Banger Records. A big and legitimate step for Ed Banger as they continue their quest to prove they are more than side-chained compression and square waves. Shobaleader One is out at the end of August and will also a feature a remix by Mr. Oizo (?!). I am quite excited for this new found collaboration.
Midnight Juggernauts kick off their North American Tour in NYC tomorrow night at Santos as well as a show at Brooklyn Bowl on Saturday night. Checkout more dates below. I can’t wait to witness their new found Psycho-delic sonic assault in person.
Checkout this B-Side from their latest album “The Crystal Axis” – “Michael’s Deadline”

An analog fever seems to be sweeping Australia with the Midnight Juggernauts moving into a warmer/psychedlic realm and the stoner rockers, Tame Impala making big moves around the world. Cut Copy follows suit and return with “Where I’m Going” – a very 70s tinged pop rock tune featuring Gary Glitter “Rock and Roll Part 2” Schaeffel Beat drums and over the top kids screaming “Yeah! Yeah!”. Next up is Van She, let’s see what they come up with next.

I have been following the London based duo, Mount Kimbie for a while – as they offer a refreshing sonic palette cleanser in an over saturated/banger world. I probably listen to their track “Maybes” at last once a day. July 19, 2010 marks the release of their full length album “Crooks & Lovers” a piece of recording that pays homage to the album format and is a true sonic journey. The one and only James Blake makes a few cameos on the album as well.
Check out “Field” off of “Crooks & Lovers” as well as a live video in Oslo from 2009 with James Blake.
