Body Language x Toro y Moi = Toro y Moi x Body Language

Toro y Moi is a staple of this chillwave movement and takes on Brooklyn’s own, Body Language with a heartfelt remix of “At A Glance”, reciprocating Body Language’s remix duties on Toro y Moi’s “Timed Pleasure” which was set loose into the blogosphere a few weeks ago. Both tunes are introspective takes on each others work by highlighting what each of them do best, Body Language’s chill pop sensibility and Toro Y Moi’s ability to create filtered-out atmospheres.

Jimmy Whoo – Bleep Music

Asian Dan’s Official European Union Blog Correspondent Sam recently turned me onto Jimmy Whoo, a French Producer makin some chill beats that remind me of the whole Stones Throw scene with its slow grooves and unquantized beat. There also is a Warp Records vibe a la Hudson Mohawke on this track. J Dilla’s legacy lives on! Happy Birthday Dilla!

“So here is Jimmy Whoo, formerly known as Hollywoodraff, a parisian bro doing some futuristic hip-hop or cosmic soul as he calls it himself. He is in the music business for quite a while now and is signed to Grandeville, an underground French label. Jimmy worked on several mixtapes and produced a lot of tracks already. I knew him since he did a mixtapefor NEUE.be which is just perfect and downloadable for free here. He iscurrently working on the second NEUE mixtape and also on his own debut album coming out before the summer 2k10. Be sure to check out his others tracks, highly recommended!” – Sam

Jamie Lidell – Compass

Wow. This is the music Jamie Lidell was destined to make. He proved himself a master of the crazy electronic world, by crafting his own synth programs in with Max/MSP. Now is fully blossoming into the singer/songwriter that he really is, it is totally understandable why Elton John asked him to open for him this past summer in the UK. This new song “Compass” reminds me of Feist, a common collaborator with Mr. Lidell and Gonzales – especially with the guitars and the production. I really hope that Gonzales is involved with Jamie’s upcoming album.

Surkin – Fan Out

Jaymo & Andy George dropped a new Surkin tune, “Fan Out” last night on BBC Radio 1’s In New DJ’s We Trust. A dense tune for Surkin, a lot of stuff going on synth and sample wise. The bassline blows me away when it kicks in. Hopefully Twenty Ten is the year of Surkin’s album.

Cécile & Venice – Rimmel

Here is that collaboration Venice was talking about in this Asian Dan Interview from about a year ago. This is just a fun tune, made by some fun Italian guys that are showing that Italy has more than just the bangers. And this music video just makes the tune even more fun. Fun, fun, fun for all!

Air x Breakbot

A slow disco-burner reworking of the heavily guitar driven Air track “So Light is Her Footfall”. Not Breakbot’s most revolutionary or impressive sounding remixes but an overall great vibe and that slap bass tone is fantastic.

Music Video: Two Door Cinema Club “Undercover Martyn”

The first single off the forthcoming album “Tourist History”, a pop opus mixed by the one and only ZDAR. Phoenix 2.0 for Twenty-Ten? Maybe since they were just signed to Glassnote (Phoenix’s Label) here in the US. After listening to the album all I can say is that it is dripping with pop and is mixed and produced soooo well. I am sucker for such pristine quality. Also the video is very reminiscent of the Mystery Jets’ “Young Love” video.

Mayer Hawthorne as Haircut “1000 Paper Planes”

As a gift to his Twitter followers Mayer Hawthorne decided to give away an old track from his more beat oriented days under his old moniker DJ Haircut. This track is a very Stones Throw sounding track with its unquantized/Dilla-esque sounding drums and a smooth bassline that reminds me of Dam Funk. This is yet more proof of how talented Mr. Hawthorne is at capturing the key elements of the genres of music he tries to recreate.

The 52nd Grammy Awards Re-Cap

Phoenix’s Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix wins Best Alternative Album of the Year and Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody” wins Best Record of Year beating out Lady Gaga and Beyonce. I am kind of impressed with the Grammy’s this year. Beyonce deserved what she won especially after that great cover of Alanis Morissettes’ “You Oughta Know”. I especially enjoy the fact that the Music Industry community has paid their respects to Phoenix and Kings of Leon, bands that have paid their dues in the rock sense – that have toured for over 10 years and have made more than 2 records. But it is definitely the last time we see acts like them. We are moving into a new era where every band has to reinvent themselves every release. They have to treat themselves as a start-up company that has to develop a cutting edge and revolutionary business plan with every single/album/EP that they create and put out.

When Taylor Swift accepted her first award and said “I want to thank my record label for letting me write all my songs.” I finally decide that this industry is done. We are in a time where everything is fair game. Yet another paradigm shift in the musical business world I guess we just need another Radiohead album to show everyone what we should do. Bands, artists, DJs, Producers, labels, promo companies, everyone that is still clinging onto this shell of an industry, it is time to do things differently. Let’s not just send out the same promo emails with the same old free mp3s, press releases and press photos and post it on our blog, let’s all take the time and show that we are trying to do something new and different with our art and crafts. Let’s show that we care about the quality and work that an artists puts into their work. Whether it is a band like Phoenix who spends 2 years crafting an epic song such as “Love Like a Sunset” and never settling even when it was just an infant tune called “Twenty One One Zero” or a band like Kings of Leon who have toured endlessly. Let’s just not settle for mediocrity. Not too sure what I am trying to get at with this rant or what I want to see happen to the industry. No doubt this is an argument/conflict that has been going on for decades in the industry. But I just know it is an exciting time for music.

Also I have so much love for Diplo, who I feel is a walking middle finger to the music industry. He is like thanks for giving me this Grammy for “Paper Planes” – let me shit talk everyone here at this event via twitter. Here is Diplo & Co’s lovely take on multiple Grammy winner, Beyonce’s “Halo”.

Yeasayer – O.N.E.

I never understood the appeal of Yeasayer and just saw them as some Brooklyn, vanity music/hipster band. A little too weird in that hippie way for me. And then a friend suggested I check out Ambling Alp – a well crafted pop tune that I have been listening to on repeat since Twenty-Ten began. Their next single “O.N.E.” they are giving away for free on their website, yeasayer.net – it is a happy-go-lucky synth pop tune that is my 2nd fav on the album Odd Blood. I can no longer sip on my haterade and can only appreciate this undeniable pop.
