“Entertainment isn’t killing music, its music that is killing entertainment.” – Chilly Gonzales
In honour of all things Canadia and anything that is the colours red & white Chilly Gonzales, bestows his piano magic upon us. He reaches into the club banger hip-hop canon from great composers such as 50 Cent, Busta Rhymes, and Lil’Wayne and reverse-remixes/revision/re-contextualize/deconstruct and strip them down to their melodic, harmonic and rhythmic core through the use of the piano thus “Pianist Envy” is born. So let’s hope that every Canadian Olympic athlete gets hold of this mixtape for some inspiration to finally reach for the gold. But till then let’s watch as UHMERICA rubs it in all them Canuck’s faces.
Also if Gonzales is ever performing in a town near you – GO. It is a life changing experience, tomorrow night will be my third time seeing him and I cannot wait.

Montreal’s CFCF takes on Kingdom’s “Mindreader” turning it into slick RnB tune with some shimmering synth and 2 step drums. The Todd Edwards remix is still my favorite and that B-side “You” is massive. <3 Kingdom

Penguin Prison does some fantastic stuff vocally on this b-side to his upcoming single, “The Worse it Gets” out 3.22.2010 on Neon Gold Records. Every segment of this tune, he does something different vocally which is really refreshing. This weird, sparse space pop that the indie world is fostering is where I feel Justin Timberlake should take his music. So Mr. Timberlake and Timbaland take note of Penguin Prison and Ali Love, they know what’s up. Twenty-Ten: The Future is NOW!

Shook is a Dutch producer/DJ that crafts a more musical sounding sound in the electronic/banger world. He follows suit in other electronic acts such as Kavinsky, Danger and Daft Punk by creating an alternate universe with an animated self that produces a mystique and allure, allowing his music to speak for itself. I was most impressed by his piano skills – check out the video below that won me over with his fantastic Rhodes solo. Siriusmo is a fan of his work and Shook has just finished up a remix of Emil & Friends’ “Josephine” which is waiting to be approved – so let us see what Shook has in store for us.

Shook – Something About You
1. Who is Shook? How would you describe your music?
Shook is a musical and visual outlet to escape from the world we live in today. It all began in my childhood really, when I found the glasses and I first came eye to eye with Beast. Since then nothing was like it was before. I would describe my music as electronic story telling funk.
2. What was your first musical memory?
My first musical memory is probably the constant Jazz piano playing by my father.
3. Who are your influences musical or otherwise?
I grew up listening to music ranging from Micheal Jackson and Prince to George Gerswin and Claude Debussy. Recently I have been listening to a lot of old jazz records and early 70’s funk. But, it doesn’t necessarily need to be music. It can be anything really. Like the sound of a microwave or the sounds of a skateboard. I can be influenced by art and animation too.

I don’t know how I missed this info about this collaboration that came out a few months ago about the both of these fantastic bands covering/remixing each other. What a perfect pairing. Holy Ghost!’s dark, Larry Levan disco re-visioning of “On Board” featuring The DFA Celestial Choir is exactly what I love about Holy Ghost!, vintage synths and that glorious analog warmth. And Friendly Fires takes Holy Ghost’s dark disco and is able to squeeze out all its dark pop glory. Either way just dance.

Jamie Lidell steps back from his new soulful crooner status to show his electronic roots. This is his banger take on Tiga’s absurd/cornball pop with some heavily distorted beat boxing. Don’t worry he throws in some heavily effected vocoder, Zapp & Roger sounding pentatonic vocal riffing in the middle of the track. I wonder if side of Jamie will be on his new album “Compass” coming out in May via Warp Records.

Egytian Hip Hop is a bunch of youngin’s from Manchester and Zarcorp’s latest release, Late of the Pier’s boutique label that has released Pink Stallone and other “weird” acts these past few years. At first listen of this Samuel Dust produce single “Heavenly” you can tell that they are definitely they are cut from the same DNA with their weird synth laden pop. Check out “Rad Pitt” and you can definitely hear some Cure in their music.
“Nifeo” a free form post punk exploratory jam featuring LA Priest aka Samuel Dust of Late of the Pier. An interesting piece in time that showcases what they are capable of. We shall see where Twenty-Ten takes these young men.
Also out March 1 on Phantasy Records is Late of the Pier’s new track “Best In the Class” an over the top weird prog pop track that I cannot wait for.

Meroz returns to the blogosphere with “Passion” a track that samples Fun Fun’s “Give Me Your Love”. He strikes back with a moog sequenced synth bassline that Moroder, Kris Menace and Lifelike would be proud of. How a man from the Midwest is able to channel such italo goodness is unknown.
