“Longevity” is the 2nd track we have heard from Yeasayer off their upcoming album aside from “Henrietta”. “Longevity” is a slinky dark electronic pop song with a very catchy hooks. Lyrically, there are some serious self-help quotes and mantras that are very similar to the themes in “Ambling Alp”.

The lovely Chan Marshall aka Cat Power is back with “Ruin”, the first new song from her upcoming album “Sun” which is out on Matador Records this fall. It is a sneak peek into all that is awesome about Cat Power, a track that sounds like everything Chan is good at but turned up all the way and really beefed up. Maybe it is the mixing magic of Philippe Zdar and his pumping drums and precise piano EQing that brings Cat Power into this larger than life sound.

Kindness released their “House EP” this week featuring some fantastic edits and remixes by Zdar and Erol Alkan. Erol transforms the under 2 min “Gee Up” into a 7 min epic disco funk jam, so you don’t have to keep this catchy tune on repeat in you iTunes. Erol Alkan throws in some serious Nile Rodger’s Chic style super clean rhythm guitar that is ready for the dancefloor. Zdar’s dub of “SEOD” is a deep and dark hypnotic house edit that just sucks you into the groove. The EP is out today on Female Energy.
Finally. This amazing remix of the Roulé classic, Thomas Bangalter’s “What To Do” by French Fries shall be released on July 9 via ClekClekBoom as a white label vinyl 12″ with a limited digital download on ClekClekBoom.com. Listen to clips of “What to Do” and the b-side “One Ting Dub”.
HudMo and Lunice reveal previews of their highly anticipated collaboration, TNGHT whose EP will be out July 23/24 via Warp and Lucky Me Records. It is quite a massive collection of tunes that will hopefully change up the Hip-Hop/RnB/Pop game.
Jean Nipon latest track “Raisin” is a nod to all the elements of UK club music. With a heavy emphasis on bass music, House sprinkled with some techno and 2-step vibes, Jean Nipon creates an interesting track that pays tribute to “Windowlicker”.
Van She strikes with another tune from their upcoming album entitled “Jamaica”. It is everything you expect from a song with a title like that, it is a super smooth balaeric-disco tinged pop song that slides and glides over you like warm coconut oil. There are some serious Toto/10cc vibes on this track with a touch of Lone’s warm analog synth sounds. Quite a refreshing touch to today’s pop music landscape. #sunshine
Hot Chip’s fifth album “In Our Heads” is like their past 4 albums melded into one and distilled down to all that is great about Hot Chip. They touch upon every extreme in their repertoire – from their deep dancefloor vibes (“Flutes”) to their soulful side (“Look at Where We Are”) to their power-pop/songwriter side.
“Dont Deny Your Heart” dives into that epic power-pop side of Hot Chip with its playful synths and its modulating chord progression. It is a song that nods at tracks like Christopher Cross’ “All Right” and Andrew Gold’s “Lonely Boy” while still retaining that synth-nerd vibes that Hot Chip is known for. I am especially a big fan of the angular, Devo-esque outro. “In Our Heads” is definitely Hot Chip’s most self-indulgent album, a work that allowed them to stroke every facet of their musical egos – something I am not mad about.
Be sure to check out a live rendition of “Don’t Deny Your Heart” that the band performed on the Jools Holland Show a few weeks back. It really comes to life, especially with their lovely female drummer.
