Kindness : House EP

Kindness released their “House EP” this week featuring some fantastic edits and remixes by Zdar and Erol Alkan. Erol transforms the under 2 min “Gee Up” into a 7 min epic disco funk jam, so you don’t have to keep this catchy tune on repeat in you iTunes. Erol Alkan throws in some serious Nile Rodger’s Chic style super clean rhythm guitar that is ready for the dancefloor. Zdar’s dub of “SEOD” is a deep and dark hypnotic house edit that just sucks you into the groove. The EP is out today on Female Energy.

Metronomy x Erol Alkan

Metronomy has released one of my favorite albums of the year with “The English Riviera” – an album that exercises the power of subtly through production, songwriting, lyrics, and musicianship. At first it took over 5+ listens to really appreciate and understand the album, especially after not being a fan of their previous LP’s. “The Look” was the tune that won me over and after seeing them live in Tours, France back in February I was ready to accept Metronomy into my life. Listen to this teaser of Erol Alkan’s remix of “The Bay” – a tune that makes slap bass cool again.

Connan Mockasin x Erol Alkan

Erol Alkan has been pumping out some amazing quality remixes lately. First with that fantastic remix of Tame Impalaand now this psychedelic journey of a remix for Connan Mockasin. I guess it is always a hit when Erol remixes an Aussie or Kiwi rock band.

Tame Impala x Erol Alkan

Tame Imapala brought me one of my favorite records of 2010, “Innerspeaker” – a tastefully psychedelic collection of tunes that paid homage to the album format, a medium that is not as respected or properly executed as it was years before. Mr. Alkan swoops and transforms “Why Won’t You Make Up Your Mind” into a fuzzed out disco track. Who knew harmonized distorted guitars could be so satisfying on the dancefloor.

Gonzales x Erol Alkan

Here is a preview of Erol Alkan’s re-working/re-edit/re-visioning of Gonzales’ “Never Stop” out on limited edition vinyl on Phantasy Sound. Erol turns the Rap/Piano track into a disco-techno-electro dancefloor ready tune – nothing revolutionary or different for Mr. Alkan but if anything Erol is preparing us all for the epic “Ivory Tower”.

Late Of the Pier – Blueberry

Late of the Pier strikes back with the help of Mr. Alkan once again to round out 2009 with a perfect pop tune. Just wait for when that first verse kicks in. It is a breathe of fresh air and a sign that good songwriting still exists and that Late of the Pier will fuck shit up once again. It is a tune that swirls through the decades of pop music, first stopping off in the 60s, paying homage to Late of the Pier’s weird psychedelic roots with a chorus which gives nod to britpop’s finest then next comes a very 70s/80s synth inspired 2nd verse that reminds me of something Sparks would come up with. The song ends in a fury of detuned guitars that blast off into the future – a place where Late of the Pier reigns supreme. “Blueberry” is up for download now on iTunes, Beatport, and Juno. But a lovely 12″ shall be out in early Twenty-Ten with the B-side “Best in The Class” – check out a live studio session of that tune after the jump. Pop goodness.

Boris Dlugosch – Bangkok

I remember hearing this tune as an opener for one of Erol Alkan’s Parklife sets that I downloaded a few weeks ago and I was blown away. I then heard it again on Busy P’s Essential mix and found out who this fantastic producer from Hamburg is. Boris Dlugosch has been around for quite a while and has even remixed Daft Punk’s “Digital Love” for their 2001 Daft Club internet releases. “Bangkok” is now out on Erol’s Phantasy Sounds, purchase it in its full 320 kbps glory at Beatport.

Also check out this fantastic interview with Erol at Loudandquiet.com. Erol is just a mad scientist genius living in his own world. I respect him so much for doing whatever the fuck he wants. I’m glad he understands this crazy bloghaus/banger world we live in. I cannot wait for more productions from this man.

“The reason Chemical Brothers (and Daft Punk) have had the success they’ve had is through their subtlety, their detail – it’s not mindless. Not to dismiss the current scene, but there is stuff that has got a bit too hard and a bit too mindless – if we’re not careful we’re only a few steps from Hard House or stuff like that. Let’s bring some funk back, let’s not just bang our heads on walls!”– Erol Alkan
