Emil & Friends – Cheap Imitations

Emil poses a question, “What makes Pop music Pop?” with his productions and songwriting. With this latest track “Cheap Imitations” he proves that it is not glossy production and perfect playing and that it all comes down to melody. How all it takes is an infectious melody to dig deep into your skull. He proves that not understanding a single word in a song is OK and even better in creating a mystery and need to listen to a track over and over again to figure it out further burrowing those hooks into your mind. Jai Paul and Mr. Emil are on their way to paving a new way into a Freak-Pop genre that deconstructs Pop music and distilling it into something fresh, fun and exciting.

James Blake Live At Maida Vale Studios – BBC Radio 1

“All that I know is I am falling, falling, falling – might as well fall in.”

The James Blake is in full effect on the web. His debut album is out February of Twenty Eleven. A piece of work that showcases that he is one part Bon Iver, D’Angelo, Antony Hegarty, Jeff Buckley, Jamie Lidell, Vincent Gallo, and Burial – an overall emotionally evocative being. Get lost in this first taste of his live re-workings of his vast spacey soul tracks.

Vince Guaraldi x Mayer Hawthorne

Here is Mayer Hawthorne doing a soulful rendition of my favorite Christmas song by the one and only Vince Guaraldi. I even listen to this when Christmas time is not here along with the synth intro to Paul McCartney “Wonderful Christmas Time”. Enjoy!

David Lynch x Boys Noize

So this happened. Boys Noize takes David Lynch’s electro-pop tune “Good Day Today” into the territories that we all expected David Lynch’s electronic music to go. The man with the most amazing hair gets Boys Noize’s Berlin treatment – turning the feel good tune into a hypnotic techno track. In my opinion I feel like Boys Noize should have delved into even darker territory. Maybe a Boys Noize scored David Lynch film is next…?

MGMT x Ed Banger All Stars Remix (SO ME, Breakbot & Busy P)

The Ed Bang Clan takes MGMT’s 10 min psychedelic prog-opus and transforms it into a journey of sound and dance. It all begins with a 70s Pop ballad-esque re-working in the vain of the Alessi Brothers/The Bee Gees with a lush string part, piano, acoustic guitar and harmonica – a section of the “remix” that I assume is SO ME’s doing. Next is a classic Breakbot smooth funk section, no complaints from me on this yacht rock section of the re-visioning. The last part is Busy P’s psychedelic breakbeat section that closes out the dance-opus. Overall a very impressive and tasteful Remix by the Ed Banger Team.

Flying Lotus : BBC Radio 1 Maida Vale Session

I had the privilege to see the mighty Flying Lotus live a few weeks ago at Hard Turkey Soup NYC with A-Trak and Tiga – this time with Thundercat on bass and a live drummer. It was great to hear Flying Lotus’ DJ/Live set accompanied by such stellar musicians. Flying Lotus brings his futuristic fusion jazz space funk to the BBC via an amazing live session at the legendary Maida Vale studios. This is an amazing live session that gives a nod to some of the great Jazz Fusion acts such as Mahavishnu Orchestra and Weather Report but of course with Flying Lotus’ genius touch. Also they play one of my fav tracks of his “Tea Leaf Dancer”.

Penguin Prison x Pink Stallone

A dark disco re-visioning of Penguin Prison’s Pop opus “Golden Train” by Pink Stallone. I love the chunky growling synths on this production.

David Lynch : “Good Day Today” & “I Know”

“Well, I’ve been blessed with good hair, or at least some people think it is. It is the way it is, sort of does what it wants to. So, yeah, I guess it is a metaphor for your views on art and life.” – David Lynch

Every morning I wake up hoping to have amazing hair like David Lynch and to be just as cool as he is. Now he has even shown us all how much cooler he is by stepping into the Electro-pop realm by releasing this very Brian Eno/Aphex Twin sounding Electro-Mantra-Pop song entitled “Good Day Today”. Who would’ve thought David Lynch and a Vocoder would be so cool.

“I Know” is a track that suits David Lynch’s usual bizarre/absurd/frightening imagery. It is a trudging dark Blues that reminds me of a robot version of Tom Waits – very similar to his track from the “Inland Empire” soundtrack, “Ghost Of Love”
