HURTS are a shoegaze 80s sounding synth pop group from the UK that I just discovered. Dark, tragic and thoughtful music full of great pop hooks. Depeche Mode for Twenty Ten. Jamaica transforms “Better Than Love” into a pop French synth tune. Expect big things from both groups this year.
“Wonderful Life” was my first introduction to HURTS – a song that evokes memories of Annie Lennox and Depeche Mode.

The French Power Pop Rock duo Jamaica has been making marks all over the interwebs with their newest single “I Think I Like U 2” in all its various incarnations via its amazing music video by SO-ME and remixes by the likes of the mighty Breakbot. Jamaica compiled a great party mix entitled “The Bermuda Party Compilation Mix” a mix that resembles a 2 Many DJ’s set mixed with a Jean Nipon and Breakbot mix. In other words an amazing collection of tunes that educates and keeps you dancing.
What a massive producer and talent from the UK, Jai Paul makes what sounds like lo-fi Hudson Mohawke meets D’Angelo and Madlib with massive amounts of pop hooks sprinkled on top. Definitely a refreshing sound in this electronic music world. I love his absurd humor as well, just take a look at his myspace. Check out his other beats, unfortunately they are only like 20 second clips, definitely checkout “Genevieve” – I need more music from you Jai Paul! Pretty sure Diplo will be all over this, when is the Diplo x Jai Paul x M.I.A. x Santigold collab coming out?

Todd just sent me over his remix of Talking Heads’ “Burning Down the House”, a track he debuted on his FACT mix he made back in January. For all of you in the UK who were waiting to see Todd last night sorry that didn’t happen, apparently Volcanos hate good music. Word on the street is that there are no flights from London to America until May 1. Twenty Twelve is now upon us so instead of freaking out just download this great remix and dance. Also be on the look out for a new 90 minute Todd Edwards Scion A/V mix coming soon!
Some words via Todd’s interview and mix for FACT Mix from back in January.
“Growing up I loved ‘Burning Down The House‘. When I hear it, it reminds me of my childhood. Over the last year or so, I’ve been envisioning songs that I could “Todd-i-fy. ” I could hear ‘Burning Down The House’ as a club track. I feel good about the results.”
In a week or so Two Door Cinema Club arrives stateside to bring the US a taste of their pop goodness. Brazil’s The Twelves provides a disco reworking of “Something Good Can Work” which appears on the fantastic upcoming Kitsune Maison 9 Compilation out 4.26.2010. I will be at their NYC debut show in May- see y’all there.
A 13 min opus that revision’s the genius that is Four Tet’s “Sing” by another genius, Floating Points. A beautiful, introspective sonic journey that cleanses the mind. Purge your soul with some Four Tet x Floating Points.
Teen Inc. is a LA based duo making Balearic funk slo-jams in the vain of Dam-Funk but a little more shimmery and not as sexy. It is like Chillwave but with musicianship. Their productions border 90s smooth jazz with some psychedelic/prog touches. I guess slap bass is acceptable again in music. Buy a limited edition 7″ here.

Atoms For Peace, the only supergroup these days that seem to make any sense and actually can surpass the original bands that each member originates from. Yes, I said it. Forget RHCP and Radiohead – Thom & Flea should just continue touring and making music with Atoms For Peace. Just watching the 2 of them onstage have a dance off with each other throughout the night showed how much fun they can really have with their music. There is a definite return to innocence for Thom and Flea as they flail around to these new arrangements of Thom’s solo album “The Eraser”. It is as if they are taken back to their days when they were just starting a band. Overall a rare treat to see such musicians of great caliber, Flea, Thom Yorke, Nigel Godrich, Joey Waronker, and Mauro Refosco – all on one stage. It goes to show that musicianship is something that still shines through in this crazy industry.
Flying Lotus opened both nights, literally destroying the soundsystem with his sub-bass goodness. Highlights of his sets were him dropping Mr. Oizo “Stunt” & “Postif” and then closing with an a capella of Burial into Radiohead “Idioteque”.
If Atoms For Peace are playing in a city near you – go. Or if any of you are making your way out to Coachella, make sure to stick around for the final night.
It is finally upon us, Todd Edwards collaboration with Scion A/V. A massive collaboration with fantastic remixes, it is hard to pick my favorite – but of course I am quite partial to the Joy Orbison. All I have to say is download, listen, dance, enjoy, repeat. God bless Todd. Tweet your love to @ToddEdwards3000
