The mysterious Kindness has one over my heart with his album “World, You Need A Change of Mind”. It is an album that sits in a place somewhere between nostalgic music while being the most exciting and forward thinking collection tunes out today. After reading this candid Q&A with Kindness in Interview Mag, you really get an understanding of what a self-aware character Adam Bainbridge is and how he curates and positions himself.
“House” is a standout tune on the album. It is most fit for a “single” with its simple piano chords, big pop synth sounds and its emotional hook that you just want to sing along with. “World, You Need a Change of Mind” is out May 8 in the US on Terrible Records/Casablanca Records. Pre-Order the album here. For those of you in NYC, Kindness will make his live debut at Le Poisson Rouge May 17 and DJ at the Tribeca Grand May 19.
Lone has crafted this beautiful journey of a mix that clocks in just under 42 minutes for his label, the prolific R&S Records. The first 4 minutes alone are worth the listen of this mix which he begins with a tune featuring Thom Yorke (that I need help identifying) into a tasteful remix of Aphex Twin’s “Windowlicker”. There is an unexpected but welcomed dive into some classic boogie/disco tunes that segue into some of Lone’s warm productions with a closing by an Evian Christ tune.
Montreal’s CFCF is set to release his concept EP “Exercises” next week. “Exercises” is an exercise the modes of variation and repetition that the greats of the 20th Century Modern Music utilize in many of their prolific works. CFCF is heavily informed by these techniques and provides a clear view of the intersections of dance, electronic, and modern composition. Stream the entire EP below via Hypemachine.
Mr. Kieran Hebden aka Four Tet has put together this new mix for April entitled “Conference of the birds”. It is an extremely deep housey mixtape with a mysterious tracklist, apparently a few new tunes from the man himself that will be out shortly. So get ready to dig into a seriously vibey mixtape.
The Fort Lean bros enlist Twin Shadow to take their sun-tinged single “Sunsick” to a new place. Twin Shadow transformers “Sunsick” into a mutated balearic disco tune that is surely could be a soundtrack to your summer BBQ’s. Just make sure to stay hydrated so you don’t get – sunsick, get it?!
Breakbot’s first ever full length album “By Your Side” will be out in September of this year 2012. “Programme” is the B-side to the first single and it is quite a 70s smooth rock jam. Just imagine if The Doobie Brothers and Steely Dan decided to score a film together in the mid 80s – this would be the title credits music. So much smooth guitar and synth, I love it.
Mr. Tom Jenkinson aka Squarepusher returns to his electronic roots with his latest tune “Dark Steering” off his upcoming album “Ufabulum”. Check out his LED filled visual experience that accompanies is new live performance. This is definitely some old school Squarepusher.
Housse de Racket do a tasteful job at making The Beach Boy’s “Til I Die” their own with this spacey psychedilic cover. This video they created to accompany the cover is something reminiscent of a Storm Thurgeson artwork. Pink Floyd and co would approve.
BBC Radio 1 has bestowed the honor of an Essential Mix upon Rustie who brings the airwaves to some next level. This mix is the “SHUT THE FUCK UP WHEN I TALK TO YOU, FOR I EMBARASS YOU” of mixes. Serious.
