I’m all about breakbeat/hip hop beats made by white boys from the UK lately – Hudson Mohawke and Bullion are really doing it for me lately. Neon Gold Records latest artist, the blog turned label that have released acts such as Passion Pit and Marina & The Diamonds presents NYC’s Penguin Prison. Penguin Prison channels some early George Michael on this tune, a pristine pop tune with bouncy synths that remind me slightly of Miike Snow, maybe it is the Animal theme as well. A very 80s-white man doing world music-pop a la Peter Gabriel, Paul Simon & The Police seems to be making a comeback lately (ie. Friendly Fires’ “Kiss of Life”) – and there is nothing wrong with that and I am all for it. Check out “Animal Animal”.

Shinichi Osawa & team up to create this monster of a track – bang it out loud. They take parts of Shinichi’s remix of Cazals’ “Poor Innocent Boys” which samples that falling noisy synth from Human Resources’ “Dominator” and throw in a little breakdown from Shinichi’s cover of “Star Guitar” – and presto – a banger of a track.

I’m only a fan of Metronomy remixes, like the Breakbot and the Diskjokke remixes. Joakim revises Metronomy’s new track “Not Made for Love” – he is quite bold by starting the track off upbeat and slowing it down – I feel like that is a ballsy and blasphemous thing to do with a dance track, but he pulls it off. I’m a big fan of what Joakim has been doing lately – looking forward to more stuff.

Here is a live unreleased track from Phoenix that they played at the Southside festival in 2005, Jetplane. It was slated to be on It’s Never Been Like That but didn’t make the cut. It is definitely a different vibe for them and a b-side sounding track. Thomas Hedlund (drums) channels his Steward Copeland at some points in the tune to give it a very Police-y sound. Thoughts?
