Asian Dan’s Guest List : Bibio Top 5 of 2011

Bibio is merely a man that loves to create for the sake of creating. His identity and his sound can be heard in whatever genre he decides to touch upon in his productions – all in a sincere and honest way. Let Mr. Bibio lead you down story lane as he speaks in great detail about his Top 5 favorite releases of 2011.

Bibio’s Top 5 Releases of 2011 (in no particular order):

Rustie – Glass Swords

Favorite Track from off the release: Rustie – Surph

I got a promo CD copy of this when I was down in London, I was at the Warp office where I was paying Steve Beckett & co a visit, and as I was leaving I grabbed a few goodies. Luckily I had my macbook with me so I could listen to it on the train home to Wolverhampton. Before heading off to the tube station, I joined a few of the lovely Warp folks for a pint and a pork pie in the ale house around the corner from the Warp office. Then, I headed to Euston, got my train, I got a seat (with a table), laptop out, got me a baguette and a bottle of water and put on my headphones. To cut to the chase, I was amazed by this album on first listen. It’s just so energetic, there are no dull moments. Rustie has really shone as a musician/producer/composer on this album, all the tracks are really well structured and have really hooky melodies and themes, it doesn’t feel stuck in a genre either, it feels like it gathers the best from various genres and makes something far more musical and colourful than anything else out there that he is often compared to. I think this album is a future classic, and a reassuring reminder that Warp is moving forward yet keeping its ear for magic. Rustie deserves far more attention, especially after putting out this gem. Some reviewers seem to mention the computer game theme a lot, but I don’t get that as much… what I get is fantasy landscapes with portals and weird surreal crystal sculptures and alien plants, kind of like something from the original ‘He-Man’ series, ‘Le Planete Sauvage’ or Norman McLaren’s ‘A Phantasy’, but with an occasional 90s nostalgia and a 21st century shiny digital edge… and so the faux-airbrushed album art is a perfect presentation of this album.

Noah & The Whale x Bibio

Bibio traverses into smooth disco territory that was once ruled by Alan Braxe & Fred Falke. With this remix of Noah & The Whale’s “Waiting for My Chance to Come” Bibio does his best Alan Braxe & Fred Falke impression with a slick bassline and kick/cowbell-on-4 drum pattern. But to truly Bibio-it-up there is a super smooth guitar solo interlude and a gnarly squelching outro synth solo. More music from Bibio!

Bombay Bicycle Club x Bibio

Bibio graces the British popsters, Bombay Bicycle Club with his music magic. Everything down to the vocals sound like Bibio himself. What more can I say than, Bibio is the truth.

Bibio : Télérama-Radio Mix

Mr. Bibio has been one of the most intriguing artists of the past few years with his talent for blurring genres while still producing something honest and fresh. Bibio crafted this exclusive 55 min mix for Télérama-Radio as a peak into some of the musical puzzle pieces that equal “Bibio”. There is a lot of his Warp Records peers (Clark, Aphex Twin, Squarepusher) on the mix alongside some Nick Drake, The Incredible String Band and nice surprise appearance by Led Zeppelin’s “No Quarter”.

Music Video : Bibio “K is For Kelson”

“Mind Bokeh” is everything I expected from Bibio – a schizophrenic yet smart look into his musical mind often exploring territories that he should not be in but somehow pulling it off in his own “Bibio” way. “K is For Kelson” is summery Brazilian pop song made for Sesame Street. His latest music video for the “K for Kelson” with its 90s VHS public television/Sesame Street look at “Speak n’ Spell” theme proves that Bibio has been in on this joke the entire time. Bibio is everything a contemporary producer/artists/band should be – a self-aware musical chameleon that always should over-step their musical boundaries.

Bibio “Mind Bokeh” Sampler

I have been listening to this just over a minute sampler of Bibio’s upcoming album “Mind Bokeh” for the past week and a half. I have probably listened to it about 50 times. I have tweeted and posted it on Facebook enough to declare it my album of 2011 even though this is the only bit of the album I have heard. It is every element of Bibio turned up to 11 – from his amazing beat-making, his lo-fi found sound experiments, his beautiful jazz/classical guitar all mixed and blurred with his amazing grasp of Pop music.

Out March 28 in the US and April 4 worldwide on Warp Records.

Gonjasufi x Bibio

Bibio is on a serious roll with his latest remix, first with that great remix of Neon Indian and now this remix of fellow Warp Records label mate, Gonjasufi. This release is off “The Caliph’s Tea Party” a remix album of Gonjasufi’s psychedelic tracks. Bibio really taps into his electronic beat making side with a heavy Rhodes driven section with some lovely drum machine patterns that compliment Gonjasufi’s shaman-esque voice. The second half of the track is a whole other story with a heavy synth/slap bassline and echoing snare along side some funky guitar chords that just dominates and causes you to bow down at the greatness that is Bibio.

Neon Indian x Bibio

Bibio blesses the chillwave king, Neon Indian with a re-visioning of his track “Mind, Drips”. This is the only way you can get me to appreciate a Neon Indian track, with this remix that showcases the full Bibio sonic spectrum. From his ability to produces raw beats to his amazing grasp of jazz guitar – this track has it all.
