Asian Dan Interview: Poney Poney

Antoine and Flo from Poney Poney were kind of enough to answer a few questions for Asian Dan. Find out what it was like to work with Xavier and Para One and what some of their favorite tunes are at the moment. Their new EP is out now on Institubes. I can’t wait for their pop drenched album.

Poney Poney – When Do You Wanna Stop Working? (Pacific Remix)

Asian Dan Interview: Poney Poney

1. Who is Poney Poney? How would you describe your music?
Antoine: We’re Antoine and Flo, two gentlemen from Paris. We play modern pop music.

2. What are your biggest influences, musical or otherwise?
A: Good melodies, ostinato, solos and snares that go “pff”.

3. What are your first musical memories?
A: Playing the flute at school then learning “Apache” on the guitar to impress my swedish penfriend. It didn’t work.
Florent : My dad playing piano.

4. As a band what was it like to work with electronic music producers such as Xavier from Justice on “Cross the Fader” and Para One on your latest, soon to be release EP “WHEN DO YOU WANNA STOP WORKING?” ? Did they approach you guys?

A: We’ve worked with Xavier before “Cross The Fader” and he’s currently producing our first record, along with an American killer named Peter Franco. It’s been great of course.
I once asked Para One, whom I met before through friends, if he’d be ok to produce a track for us. Since he liked what we did, he agreed on trying and mostly worked alone from the tracks we brought him. He’s a really smart guy and we definitely share the same way of describing music and how a song should sound.

The main point is that those guys have rather extreme ideas and no fear to produce what might sound unconventional for a regular producer.

5. What are your top 5 favorite pop songs?
A: It’s an everyday update but today it’s “Solsbury Hill” by Peter Gabriel, one yet untitled song from our album, Big Yellow Taxi” by Joni Mitchell, , “1901” by Phoenix and “Love is Like Oxygen” by Sweet.

F : For now, it’s “Tiny Dancer” by Elton John, “Walking on a dream” by Empire of the Sun, “I’m not movin” by Phil Collins, “Listen to me please” by Supertramp, “Eye in the sky” by Alan Parson Project

Sweet – Love is Like Oxygen

6. What are your top 5 songs you put on to dance?
A: Any song I know works on me, I’m a dj whore.

F : “Positif” by Mr OIZO, “Antibodies” by Poni Hoax, “Necessary Evil” by Armand Van Helden, “Be Like You (The Twelves Re-Edit)” by Alan Parsons Project, “Don’t stop me now” by Queen

7. How is the Poney Poney album coming along? Any big collaborations on that? Any dream collaborations come true?
A: Xavier and Peter on production is already great. We both play all the instruments involved, save for some drumming by our live hitman, David. But we won’t invite anyone famous to do any cameo, since we don’t personnaly know David Bowie and he lives too far from our studio, plus I don’t really believe in featurings, at least for a first rock record.

8. Future plans for Poney Poney? Tours, etcs?
A: We’ll start touring again soon, this summer or a bit later, depends on the time we need to prepare for the new set up. In the meantime, we’ll do dj sets here and there. It’s quite new for us but we’re loving it. We’re really proud of our album.
