Matt Van Schie released a solo EP this year entitled “Balmy Nights”, a collection of songs that take a nod to some of the great smooth Yacht Rock sounds of the late 70s and 80s with a touch of New Wave as well as some Aussie warmth. So don’t be surprised when you find some 80s gems that topping his 2010 list. Do yourself a favor and give Michael Sembello’s Cowboy a listen – we need more hooks like this in music in 2011.

I wish I could name my band after my last name. Matt Van Schie is one of the few and lucky in the world to follow in suit of the greats, Van Halen and Bon Jovi. Matt’s solo EP, Balmy Nights has been on repeat for the past few weeks for me. A fantastic collection of summer pop tunes. “Journey” is his latest single off the EP proceeding the great track “Saturday Night”. Van She Tech at the Brooklyn Bowl last weekend dropped this great remix of “Journey” by Teenagersintokyo a great dancefloor pleaser. Be sure to check out his uber sexy vid for “Journey” after the jump. A vid that chops up the French film “L’amant” by Jean-Jacques Annaud.
GLOVES basslines keep getting better and better. He blew me away with that Miami Horror remix and now he strikes back with some more Aussie on Aussie action by remixing Matt Van Schie’s “Saturday Night”. I need to make my way down to Oceania immediately to experience this amazing music scene first hand.
Matt Van Schie of Van She has released a track of his own for free on the interwebs. It reminds me of The Buggles especially during the chorus. It has a very nerdy 80s rock vibe, I feel it.
Two gentlemen from Van She, Matt Van Schie and Touch Sensitive team up again for a moody track, “Anywhere” under the moniker Tear Council. Prepare yourself as you dive head first into this Aussie duo’s deep feels.
Matt Van Schie and Mighty Mouse’s duo “Du Tonc” releases their 2nd single “Surging Memories”. It is a light and driving guitar driven track that sets the tone for an evening just as the sun begins to set, allow the chorus to wash over you.
Mighty Mouse and Matt Van Schie team up under the moniker Du Tonc to produce some downtempo balearic infused tunes. The first of which is “Darkness” 107 bpm disco house track that reminds us all of warmer times. Matt Van Schie takes charge of crooning over this slinky track with its trickling guitar lines and marching basslines.
In no specific order I present you with my Top 10 of 2010. I listened to Jai Paul and James Blake way too much this year and cannot wait for what they have in store for 2011. Yeasayer’s “Ambling Alp” and “Penguin Prison’s “Golden Train” are perfect Pop songs that I wish I wrote. Flying Lotus “Do The Astral Plane” is the perfect sunny summer jam. Chromeo’s duet I Could Be Wrong (Feat. Ezra Koenig) is what happens when the Doobie Brother’s “Minute By Minute” is mashed up with Philip Bailey & Phil Collin’s “Easy Lover”. Jamie Lidell never made 90s RnB sound so cool and futuristic with “Completely Exposed”. LCD Soundsystem’s “I Can Change” is quite a sad dance tune. Late of the Pier’s “Blueberry” and “Best in Class” IS what the Future sounds like. Jamaica’s “Short & Entertaining” is my favorite song in 5/8 of 2010.
2010 was quite an exciting blog year for Asian Dan, especially what occurred IRL because of the blog. Thank you all for reading and listening, only bigger and better things will happen in 2011. Happy New Year!
