Vampire Weekend x Chromeo

Chromeo work their remixing skills on Vampire Weekend’s “The Kids Don’t Stand a Chance” to turn it into a dance floor ready track. I remember A-Trak dropping this back in August in Toronto at the Time Festival and everyone goin’ nuts. I love the sequenced bassline and the chorus that sounds so Police “Don’t stand! Don’t Stand! Don’t stand so close to me!”. Tune into the mtvU awards show to see Chromeo and Vampire Weekend performing live together. It has been quite a year for both of these bands.

Treasure Fingers x Chromeo

Chromeo work their magic 80s pop touch to turn this Treasure Fingers’ disco tune into a Hall & Oates’ tinged track. Do the marshmallow and the electric slide. I can’t wait for the Chromeo remix of Vampire Weekend!

Chromeo x Daryl Hall

YES!!! It’s happening!!

Filter Mag: The Six Degrees of Hall & Oates

“Daryl Hall’s free web-show, Live From Daryl’s House, has become a destination for music fans seeking the latest in up-and-coming artists. The 10th edition, which can be seen on www.livefromdarylshouse.com, starting August 15, will feature highly touted, two-man Canadian electrofunk outfit Chromeo.

The Montreal-based pair is made up of Dave 1 (David Macklovitch) on guitar and vocals and P-Thugg (Patrick Gemayel) on keyboards, synthesizers and talk box. They’ve released two albums, including 2004’s She’s In Control and 2007’s Fancy Footwork, both on prestigious indie label Vice. The band was named MTV’s Artist of the Week in Oct. 2007. The set included a pair of Daryl Hall & John Oates hits, “Family Man” and “Adult Education” as well as Chromeo songs, “Tenderoni” and “Waiting 4 U””

The Virgins – Murder

The Virgins just released their self-titled album at the beginning of the month and it is totally different than their ’07 EP. This is a polished pop album that Hall & Oates would be proud of. The album reminds me of a sunnier and poppier version of Cazals with lyrics about rich upper east side girls. They reworked and tweaked all the songs from their EP that appear on the LP, like “Rich Girls” which sounds so polished and pop and “Love is Colder Than Death” has completely new instrumentation with saxophone taking the main role. Rock and roll is on its way back.

“Murder” is a funky 80s tune with vocals that sound so much like Elvis Costello especially during the hooky chorus. I love the wah-wah guitar. Everything is so perfect and pop!! I love it!

BREAKBOT Remixes

I love Breakbot’s production style. It is so 70s sounding. His bass samples are so good and real sounding, they remind me of Fred Falke’s bass playing. Hall & Oates and Steely Dan would be proud of what Breakbot is doing.

This track could be the next D.A.N.C.E, with the little children singing and that funky piano part.
PNAU – Baby (Breakbot Remix)

This sounds like a Prince track.
Pacific! – Hold Me (Breakbot Remix)

The Six Degrees of Hall & Oates: Music in 2007

I realized this year that Hall & Oates are two of the most important songwriters in the past 25 years. Their musical influence has transcended genres and generations. This is a Hall & Oates Musical Tree I made that represents how they are connected to some of the big names in music of 2007.

Happy New Year!!! Be safe and be easy. 2008 will be the return of Hall & Oates!!

“So – let’s get going, shall we? Send the check for US$400,000 (advance on licensing fees) out by Fedex to Mickey by tomorrow and we’ll talk a little later in the day about merch, percentages, backend, soundtrack, ASCAP, etc.”
-Steely Dan
Ha, too bad there were no Darjeeling Limited inspired Steely Dan tracks in the movie.

Steely Dan – Hey Nineteen
Steely Dan – Peg

“But if we were great musicians and we had big studios, I think we would make something that sounds like late-’70s, West Coast pop music, like Steely Dan or something. But because we have to work in a simpler way, it ends up sounding like what we do.”
– Gaspard Auge (1/2 of Justice)

Justice – B.E.A.T.
Donna Summer – Dim All The Lights
Hmmmm interpolation?

“I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do)” helped inspire the song “Billie Jean”. “Michael Jackson once said directly to me that he hoped I didn’t mind that he copied that groove (from “I Can’t Go For That”). That’s okay; it’s something we all do. Eddie Van Halen told me that he copied the synth part from “Kiss on My List” and used it in “Jump”. I don’t have a problem with that at all.”
-Daryl Hall
Hall & Oates- You’re Too Much Too Soon (Todd Rundgren Produced)
One of the best synth lines ever, you cannot resist to dance.
Van Halen – Dancing In The Streets

Hall & Oates are going on a small North American tour in the winter, I am thinking of seeing them in Boston December 8, partying with drunk middle aged couples, woo, I will probably be one of the few college students there. Hall & Oates Tour Dates

Hall & Oates + Todd Rundgren = ??!?!?!!!!! And some other new music

In 1974 an amazing collaboration occurred between two musical giants to produce an album that very few know about. “War Babies” a prog pop masterpiece that serves as a precursor of what amazing music these musical mavens would create. Todd Rundgren’s Utopia played all the music on the album providing a sound reminiscent of the prog greats of the time such as Yes, Genesis & King Crimson. I liken this album to what Minus the Bear does in the 21st century. Prog Pop at its best.
Hall & Oates – Beanie G. and The Rose Tattoo

Justin Timberlake totally rips off Andy Gibb, the youngest Bee Gee’s brother who was too good to be in the group and had to go solo. He was a total baller rock star and died of a drug overdose, too bad.
Andy Gibb – (Our love) Don’t Throw it All Away

Check out my boy Zack’s band Radiation Year and their new song from their upcoming cd, “Age of the Everglades”. They are a fresh sounding hardcore band that evokes the energy of Rage Against the Machine and just makes you want to kick someone in the face.
Radiotion Year – Sex On the Beach

Here is some German electro goodness from our boy, Boys Noize. Cranking out the distorted, tight, synth sounds that no one can resist. Check out the rest of his album Oi Oi Oi which comes out this week.
